Welcome to Write About It Wednesday! Summer is in the air and students all across America have either already had their last day of school for the year, or the last day is quickly approaching. (Unless they attend a year round school, in which case, bless their poor little hearts).

The last day of school can be both exciting and bittersweet. As Alice Cooper eloquently put it:

“School’s out for summer
School’s out forever
School’s been blown to pieces

No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher’s dirty looks

Well we got no class
And we got no principles”

No more class or studying or listening to teachers and following rules. Students are free to do as they please all summer long. But, you may not see your friends until school is back in session again in the fall. And if you are a bit of a nerd who enjoys school like I was you might miss having class.

This week we will be Writing About the Last Day of School with these writing prompts:

1. Write about the last day of school from the view point of the class pet or an inanimate object. (Will the object enjoy the quiet that come with summer? Will they be sad and lonely waiting for the students to return? What does the last day of school look like to the object? Can they feel the excitement?)
2. Write about a student who isn’t excited about the last day of school. (Why aren’t they excited? Do they love school? Do they have a bad home life? Are they moving away and won’t be back next year? Are they a nervous high school or college senior not looking forward to going on and entering the real world?)
3. Write about a student who finally approaches their crush on the last day of school. (Why did the student wait so long to approach their crush? How will the crush respond? Will a romance blossom or did the student miss their chance?)

The last day of school is the end of the school year but the beginning of summer. The end of one school grade and the start of a whole new world of possibilities.

I hope your little writing gears are grinding away in your head, ready to set pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard).
