Prom is a right of passage for most American High School Students. It is the big event at the end of the year for juniors and seniors. The event that they look forward to attending with their friends and significant others. All across the country Proms have been taking place for the last few weeks and more will happen in the coming weeks.
In high school, I attended three different Proms. The dances were fun, but I don’t think they lived up to the hype of what media portrays Prom to be. It becomes this almost mythical event that can make or break your high school experience and future.
In a sense, Prom has become a cliche in young adult books, movies, and television shows. And, I admit that Proms do play a roll in my stories too. Katelynn’s high school boyfriend dies at her Prom (and she ends up in a coma) – which causes her to have certain anxieties, survivor’s guilt, and depression.
Prom also is featured in Friendzone, my current work-in-progress. I’m not going to tell you much about it since it is till a WIP, but the events that take place at Prom has a major effects on several characters.
So, now for the Write About It Wednesday: Prom Prompts:
- Write about a Prom that takes place in a sci-fi high school setting.
- Write about a Prom that ends with a bang. (interpret however you want.)
- Write about a Prom committee Coup d’état.
- Write a Prom horror story.
- Write about Prom at Hogwarts (or your fantasy school of choice).
How was your Prom? Did you attend? Do you think Prom is overplayed and over-hyped in the media? Do you think it has become a cliche? Have you ever written about Prom before? Tell me in the comments!
